Slidin’ Thru: Derez De’shon

Derez De’Shon has been making a name for himself in the rap game. With his hit record “Hardaway” officially landing a spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart just last month, this proves to be just the beginning for the Atlanta rapper. In fact, he’s already worked with artists including Waka Flocka Flame, Birdman, and Jacquees. Read more…

“Hardaway” comes from Derez’ project Pain, released last year. DJ Envy originally discovered the track at a club in ATL and helped him sign with Commission Records, home to Lil Dicky, Madeintyo, 24hrs, and IDK. From growing up on the streets to running with Rich Gang, Derez is ready to tell his own story through his music.

For those who don’t know, who is Derez De’Shon?

Derez De’Shon? [laughs] That’s me. Myself.

How would you describe your sound?

Me. Original. Organic.

Where do you fit in the realm of R&B and Hip Hop?

Both.

You’re from Atlanta. How important is it to come to Los Angeles for music?

Very important, so the world know that you’re not just Atlanta.

Talk about your hit record “Hardaway.” 5 million views. Did you ever think it would blow up like this?

I feel blessed. I never thought it would make it this far.

Did you see Birdman remix your record with Toni Braxton?

Yeah, I heard it. Crazy, right?!

The music video has a cameo from Birdman. Talk about your relationship with Bird.

He’s like a family. Like a uncle — a good guider.

You were actually in the room at Breakfast Club during the “Put some respek on my name ordeal.” What was your initial reaction?

I was like, “Oh shit, what’s going on?” [laughs] It shocked me.

You recently posted on IG, “All the bullshit I done been through, I don’t know how I exist. I could have died a million times or been locked up for a body.” Can you talk about that?

I’m just saying that I’m very grateful to be where I’m at. I could have been locked up or dead living how I was — being involved with what I was involved with.

What do you want fans to get from your story?

I just want them to get an understanding with themselves and a better relationship with God. And keep faith in themselves, no matter how hard it gets.

What’s a normal day in the life? Walk us through.

Now it’s just work. Work, work, working. Videos, recording, trying to figure out how to market the brand. Just building everything.

What would you be doing if you weren’t rapping?

[laughs] I don’t know. I could have been trapping, robbing, killing — who knows?

Any hobbies?

I mean, I always liked the music. Making beats.

But if you could do something besides music?

Build. I’ll probably be like an architect or something.

What’s the best encounter you’ve had with a fan?

When I walked out of Walmart one time and a 10-year-old girl just bust out crying.

Who’s the most played artist on your phone?

Lil Baby.

Dream collab?

Chris Brown.

Anything else you wanna let Young California know?

I love y’ll! I appreciate y’ll for letting me be here.
