Hella Juiced: TruCarr
TruCarr is here to put Watts on the map. The 24-year-old has been steadily building his fanbase, but it was his most recent single “Outside” that declared his place as a West Coast spitter. Teaming up with DaBoii from SOB x RBE, the collaboration bridged the gap between LA and the Bay in the most positive light. Read more…
It wasn’t until after high school that TruCarr began making music, but it was his very first video shoot where the block popped out that he realized he could actually make a living off the rapping. Putting in the work necessary to make his dreams come true, he recently celebrated the success of “Outside” being played on Power 106 airwaves.
He spits in his unique, raspy voice: “I can’t chase no bitch, I chase goals.” The record itself is a certified banger.
For those who don’t know, who is TruCarr?
TruCarr is somebody that went through the struggle. He’s still on the way. He’s working right now. He hasn’t really transitioned. As of right now, you see me as Scarf Dawg, but Trucarr is that grinding mode. Still hungry.
Who’s Scarf Dawg?
Scarf Dawg is the elevation. You gotta get somewhere to be somewhere. We gotta put that work to get somewhere. I’ve been putting in all this work so now this is Scarf Dawg. I’m talking about the whole little swag, from the shoes to how I move. Everything.
How long have you been making music?
I’ve been making music for about four or five years now.
Being from Watts, what were you seeing growing up?
It’s gutta. Everyday you gon’ hear sirens, because you already know there’s violence in the area. Street shit. Violence. Females. It’s really section-wise, so we stay in our section. Everybody just be turning up in their sections really. But stay in your section, where you’re from. Luckily, I do my thing and I move around. I’m able to do that with whoever I move around with.
Were you in the streets?
I was, but I ain’t gangbangin’. I was making music, I was doing sports, but it’s half and half. Still in the street. I still do street shit, but I ain’t really have to do that because my family members were doing that. Other than that, I was doing my thang.
Biggest influences growing up?
It was a lot of back and forth because I wanted to do a lot of things. I ain’t never wanted to do one thing. At first, it was sports. I did the sports for awhile. I played football. I can’t say I wanted to be like a specific player though, because I really wanted to do my thing. I played basketball. Shit, I played baseball. When I got to high school, it was a wrap. Started transitioning, you meet people and start doing different stuff. Shouldn’t have did shit, but it happened. But now I’m here though!
What was the inspiration behind your name?
True, keep it 100. Facts, stating facts. Carr is my last name so I just put that on the back of that. True-carr, I just wanted to be me. 100 and true, that’s me.
So do the real ones know you as Scarf Dawg?
Hell yeah! They been knew Scarf Dawg. But for the fans… I’ve been did this shit, I’m just reintroducing it right now. So in a way, a lot of people didn’t know. But my close people, hell yeah they know.
Homie: Scarf Dawg originated in Vegas. [chuckles]
I needed a haircut. There was a scarf right there, I just put it on. It was a wrap after that.
What was it like seeing Jay Rock take off out of Watts?
That shit lit, on everything. For the city, that shit’s a glow-up. it’s a plus. For me, because he’s right there from where I am. That’s dope! My n*gga doing his shit, that’s lit. Then the fact that we know him, that’s even more lit. We see somebody that we know doing their thang. “Oh yeah, that’s lit! My boy, look at you. Do ya thing, I’ma see you.” [chuckles] Cool person fasho.
How’d you link w/ DaBoii from SOB x RBE?
That happened on some street shit. My people’s from South Central, they were playing my song in the studio. He was there, bro just tapped in. The next day, he hit me like “hey bro, that’s like my favorite song.” I’m like “alright cool then shit, fuck with a n*gga.” He fucks with me genuinely. He’s 100.
People say he’s the hardest in the group.
He doing his shit. He hard as fuck, but I ain’t pick and choose. They all hard, they all doing their shit. But that n*gga eating fasho!
Best memory from the “Outside” video shoot?
Fucking with everybody. Everybody just being there. Seeing everybody out not even just for me, but seeing everybody fuck with each other. That’s dope. It could be all because of me but still, to see everybody fucking with each other, that’s 100 fasho.
Who’s in your Top 5?
I don’t even listen to other people. Not to say it like that, but I just don’t listen. Before I made music, I didn’t even listen to music type shit. I wasn’t even into it. But I grew up off of Boosie, Lil Wayne, shit like that. That shit was playing in the streets, so you gon’ have to hear it.
What’s your favorite Lil Wayne song?
It has to be a throwback song, it ain’t nothing right now. I can’t even tell you a specific song.
What is it you want fans to get from your story?
Basically whatever you go through, keep going! ‘Cause I done been through a lot of shit. My daughter passed, that’s who’s tatted on my neck. She had to go through 13 surgeries in 3 months. Her brain was bleeding, but it’s all good. We use that as motivation. She passed away at three months.
When did that happen? I’m so sorry.
In 2016. It’s motivation though, we use that to uplift us. Now I’m Scarf Dawg! It’s a push. You gotta get up and do something about it.
Where do you get that resilience and ability to be strong through it?
Hell yeah, people go crazy after that. Shit, reality. Just think about reality. If I were to sit down and do nothing everyday about the situation, I’d be stuck in the same situation every day. I’ma be mad everyday. Fuck all that, I’d rather switch it up. So I kept myself busy when that situation came. But then again, I still think about it.
Where were you when you heard your song on the radio?
That shit dope! That’s love too. I was at Roscoe’s, on Main and Manchester. It was a dope feeling. I ain’t ask them at all. “Outside” won the New Music Monday contest and that’s how it got approved for airing. Shout out to DJ Carisma. Shoutout to Nick Cannon. They both seemed to be fucking with it.
I ran into Carisma one night I had a show. One of the homies told me to pull up to another club, to Blue Moon and she was there. That night, Blueface had got in a fight or whatever, so we were up in there and I had performed. After that, I had told her this one of the hottest songs out. She’s like, “How is it the hottest song and I ain’t heard it?” I’m like “well shit, nice to meet you! I’m TruCarr.” After that, she turned me up. It was love, they both did their part. Shout out to both of them, all love!
What can we expect next music-wise?
I’m pushing my tape right now. TruForerver the mixtape: The Journee. I’m about to shoot this video shoot tomorrow called “Won’t Fold Up,” then another video after that called “Slide.” I got a show in LA on Valentine’s Day. I just be doing my thing. I’ma pop out. I mess with everybody that messes with me. If they show love, I’ma show love back. Put on a show.
